El Hierro 3 - Spain
El Hierro is the most southwestern island of the Canary Islands. In the year 2000 the UNESCO declared it as a reserve of the biosphere. El Hierro is a true lost paradise, the great unknown of the Canary Islands. It has managed to preserve its grand cultural and environmental richness. There is no mass tourism on the island as the tourist that visits the island does so individually to enjoy so called rural tourism or trekking. The most popular sport in Hierro is scuba diving due to its clear waters and the great variety of its fauna that can be found in abundance in the mar de las Calmas `the Calm SeaŽ. Enjoy the islands views from the viewpoints dotted around it. Visit the Sabinar with its thousand-year-old trees moulded by the winds, its canary pine forests and lava trails. El Hierro will also surprise you with its archaeological areas, its rich folklore, wide variety of crafts and rich gastronomy. There are no sandy beaches but countless natural swimming pools such as the Tamaduste.
