The Dhofar region, known as Zufar in Arabic, is located in Southern Oman, in the Arabian Gulf. This place harbours unspoiled beaches, and large woods of coconut palms. In the warm turquoise waters you can go on snorkelling and diving to admire the underwater flora and marine life. Dhofar is an amazing place for exploration and discovery for its wildlife, rustic villages, majestic forts, and colourful natives. A great activity that can be done in Dhofar is Camel racing, which is an exciting sport performed by natives. Among the variety of fauna and flora are millions of migrant birds; entire unique marine ecosystems; mountains, deserts and shoreline plants of stunning diversity; endangered Arabian mammals like leopard and oryx; seashells; coral reefs; innumerable fish; whales and dolphins and turtles, etc. Every summer, in Southern Oman’s Dhofar, soothing rains bathes the coastline and mountains; carpeting the landscape in lush emerald vegetation displaying waterfalls and streams. An important city is Salalah that was built around the ancient port of Samhuran along the Frankincense trade route, and is a royal stronghold for Oman’s past Sultans. The Salalah Museum is one of the famous museums in Dhofar that is surely worth a visit. There are also several bazaars to explore - especially Al Husn Souq, famous for its prized silverware, frankincense and local perfumes. From July 15 – August 31, Salalah hosts its annual Tourism Festival. A colourful celebration of cultural events including traditional music, concerts and dance performances.
