Over the last 10 years tourism has been developing an astonishing, new phenomenon: Space Tourism. To admire the curvature of Earth from orbit was something we could not even dream about. However, currently, Space tourism has stopped being a science fiction tale, to become an “only for wealthy people experience”. The first, fortunate, fee-paying space adventurer, Dennis Tito, spent around $20 million for a week over space, in 2001.
Since 2001, at least one person a year enjoyed this out of the way trip, and they also paid billionaire sums of money for them; nevertheless, there is a huge project being developed by Virgin Galactic, one of the most promising tourist space group, to make these trips more common and affordable. The projects, which will be inaugurated this year, consist on organizing trips, of six people, a pilot and 6 passengers, to space. The flights will cost around $200.000 per person and will last around two hours and a half, where passages will experience around 5 minutes of weightlessness, and will admire the unique landscape provided by the curve of Earth.
Space tourism still is a "playground for the rich"; however, this does not mean these trips will be affordable to the middle class in the short time. At the begging of the twentieth century, nobody could even think that every middleclass family in the world could afford car.
A new project, that includes a week at the ISS space station and another week travelling around the moon, is being developed by the Constellation Service International. This exiting trip will cost the moderate sum of $11 million per passenger.
Space tourism obviously need space infrastructure. The construction of spaceports, turning space stations into space hotels, the construction of a space island with the capacity to host 20.000 people are just some of the projects held buy the biggest companies related to the tourist industry.
If you have always dreamed about going to space , admire the Earth from the Moon, and actually observe the Moon from a distance no human being had imagine before, you may be about to make your dream come true. Sooner that you think these trips will be affordable for ordinary people.
