These trips include sailing abroad, shore tours, nature walks, photography, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, wildlife viewing and the like. Currently, the most popular regions these cruise travel around are the poles, especially the Antarctica.
Two centuries ago, no human being had ever visited the white continent. Scientist started exploring the continent a hundred years ago and it was not until 50 years ago that the tourist industry started to exploit the region. Antarctica, the land of extremes, became the perfect place for the adventurers.
Visiting, the white continent is a one of a lifetime experience, where excursions give people the opportunity to spot a stunning and amazing wild life. For example, tourists will be able to observe a wide range of mammals, such as blue whales, seals, southern furs and elephant seals, seabirds like penguins, gulls, skuas, terns and petrels and finally, the awesome icebergs.
These cruises can last 10 days or more and include putting of board from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, travel through the Beagle Channel, across the Drake Passage, the Antarctica Peninsula, the Half Moon, Livingston and Deception Islands. As incredible as it may seem, theses cruise may also include a swim in a natural “hot tub”. Something that has to be experienced are exiting zodiac (small inflatable rubber boats) trips and sea kayaks to make landings which allows it to get into the smaller bays and through the spaces between massive icebergs that larger ships cannot travel. Some other activities included in these trips are mountaineering, diving, and camping on ice. The Antarctica also provide opportunities for tundra and glacier walking, fjord exploration in overwhelming landscapes.
Visits to the poles are becoming much better regulated, and impact has reduced in some areas. The Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty applies the same requirements to any type of activity, including tourism.
After exploring the Antarctic, some cruise extend the adventure by going north through, Chile or Argentina. Hiking in the austral continent, camping in geodesic domes powered by solar energy, and even going northwards an visiting top quality wineries or even reach to the busy capitals of both countries, Santiago or Buenos Aires, are just a small percentage of all the attraction of the regions.
Cruises towards the pole a relatively new and are gaining lot of popularity. Therefore, it is best to plan on booking at least 12 months before departure, and preferably earlier. These cruises will be unforgettable for everyone who decides to do it.
