China - India, new destinations


The fact that the global financial crisis is affecting every sector in economy especially international tourism is not anything new. However, it is forecasted a more optimistic scenario by 2010, especially in the Asian-Pacific region. The region is expected to soar with nearly 500 million visitors, generating 4.6 trillion dollars. Among the Asian countries, China and India are the most popular Asian destinations. China's popularity has been boosted by the past Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the future World Expo in Shanghai in 2010. On the other hand, India's popularity is due to its healthcare tourism and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
China and India are two strong emergent powers in the international tourism industry and they are both growing rapidly politically and economically. Therefore, they are currently occupying the second and the fourth place in the world, as regards PIB. Furthermore, they are expected to overthrow the United States and occupy the first and third place by the 2020.

Despite of the stock market instability and uncertainty, China is forecasted to have a 7 to 8 percent of annual growth in the tourist industry sector. The Olympic Games gave China the opportunity to show its grandeur to the world. China's cultural richness and political and economic success became evident in the Olympics opening ceremony and in the complementary events organized in different regions of China other than Beijing. The Olympics also promoted a wide range of infrastructure improvements which will encourage future international tourism. China is expected to be the principal tourist destination by the year 2020 with 130 millions of tourists a year.
India is expected to welcome around 750 millions of tourist by the year 2010 compared with 368 millions in 2004. India's international tourism is growing an average rate of 10% per year. One of the main Indian lures is Medical treatment, which combines health with tourism. India offers a range of world quality Doctors, hospitals and treatments at a fraction of world costs with comparable success rates and service levels.
What is more, Indian religious tourism is becoming popular too. Synagogues, churches and temples, such as, “The Cheraman Mosque in Kerala built in 600 AD, which have historical value are attracting lots of visitors.
In addition, the 2010 Commonwealth Games (one of the largest multisport games of the world) in New Delhi are going to boost substantially tourism industry. The country is focusing on creasing the infrastructure significantly. By the end of 2009, Delhi aims at becoming a world class city with excellent infrastructure along with transport facilities. Master plans have been made to improve Delhi's face which includes 10 new flyover projects, there are plans to increase the green stretches along the road sides and flyovers. A number of stadiums are being built and renovated for the game venues.
Summing up, the tourism industry foundation of China and India are strong and will continue being strong in the future. The global demand of trips and tourism will give China and India opportunities without precedents to let the industry growth. Besides the world international events which both countries will hold in 2010 will promote tourism and the improvement in the hotel industry and tourist industry. Besides both countries have an ancient culture which are calling tourist attention. People's interest on Asian cultures, International events hold in Asian countries and improvements in infrastructure, all of them seem to point to China and India as the world most wanted destinations.
