Venice, the city of gondolas

If, among all the European cities, we had to visit the most evocative and mysterious, Venice would probably be the chosen one. Well known by many as 'the Queen of the Adriatic’ and by others as ' the Serenissima’, it's a beautiful city that speaks by itself. A town of fishermen in its more remote origins, the capital of the region of Véneto has become with the passage of  time, one of the main tourist attractions of the Italic Peninsula.

Worldwide famous for its canals, this city was built on an archipelago of 118 islands in a marshy lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, between the mouths of the rivers Po and Piave. More than 400 bridges were necessary to connect each one of the small land enclaves on which soon this splendid city would be raised. In the visit  to Venice you cannot miss the Rialto Bridge, the most known and old of the three bridges that cross the Great Canal. Venturing oneself into the Venetian historical center on board of one of its popular gondolas, of course, it’s all of an experience you can't allow yourself to miss out. Surely, their renowned gondoliers will invite you to do it in more than one occasion.
But Venice is something more than its canals. Its huge artistic patrimony and long artistic course enjoy legendary fame as a reference of the European painting. Masters of the brush like Tiziano, Tintoretto or Sebastiano del Piombo were born here and their elegant streets are filled with palazzi, symbol of a time when the city shone with its maximum splendor. From 1893, the city of the canals holds the Biennial, including the famous cinema festival,  the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte, that is annually celebrated and that will make the delight of onlookers and of any movie fan.
Enjoying the food will be also a luxury for the senses. Excellent Mediterranean cuisine, based on fresh and seasonal products. Great variety of cheeses, meats and fish accompanied with wines of  the region. Like in all Italy, the pasta and risotto are unavoidable but, in addition, a traditional dish is added, the polenta, that accompanies a great number of meals. A sort of pie made with maize flour that can be served as a starter or as main course when it's filled with meat.
February is an interesting month to visit this city. Mainly if what you look for is let yourself captivated by organzas, the coloured silks and the masks. Venice is the Carnival, and its tradition goes back to 1800. Although it is truth that the wave of tourists during this time of the year is considerable, San Marcos square is always attractive, mainly as afternoon falls, by the visual spectacle of the impressive disguises.

In short, an enigmatic city by which you will let yourself embrace.
