Tunisia

Tunisia, the saharan door

Among all destinations in the world, the traveller could imagine a caravan route through the desert, and the first thing that comes to mind is an adventure with camels. But in order to make that wish come true, what would be better than to visit a place called “The Door of the Sahara” by the Tunisian people. Here starts this large desert that spreads out the borders of Libya and with a larger extension towards Argelia.
Located on the Mediterranean coast, we find the smallest country of the Magreb, although not for that reason less interesting. With more than one thousand and three hundred kilometers of coast, Tunisia is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to enjoy sunbathing and relaxing in its pristine waters. And Tunisia offers a wide range of waters for all tastes, depending on the area of the country where we want to move. To the north, cosy beaches, with white and golden sand, surrounded by mountains and abundant vegetation. To the south, the enchantment of the rural zones, contrasting with its calm waters, details that we found on the Kerkennah Islands or the Island of Djerba.
But beyond the mere tourist appeal of sun and beach, this country offers an endless range of possibilities and answers to the most demanding travellers’ expectations. Their inhabitants are hospitable and with a will of modernity that doesn't disown their ancient culture. From the Phoenicians to the Romans, this land has seen the passing of the Byzantine and the Spanish kingdom too.
Taking a stroll around the peculiar streets of the villages of Tunisia will allow us to become absorbed in the cradle of these millenarian civilizations. The capital, Tunisia, offers an extensive range of options. The factories of antiques and street markets will make the delights of most demanding travellers. We also find sophisticated restaurants, places to taste exquisite couscous or international cuisine restaurants. In spite of being a Muslim country, alcohol is allowed and the Tunisian wines have an excellent quality. For the most valiant of drinkers, boukha and thibarine are two typical liquors from these warm land.
Tunisia is not an excessively massive country, nevertheless is full of contrasts, and moving around its different cities is highly recomendable. Touzeur, located right in the core of the salt desert, is a clear example of diversity at a same point. Tracing the tracks of the past, we can get into labyrinthical districts from the 14th century, whose narrow streets avoid the penetration of the sun protecting this way the inhabitants from the heat. You can also visit one of the largest palm groves in the country. Everything around us will remind us of the old paradise and we’ll feel like protagonists of a great film.
